Mrs. Joyce Hanna passed on April 14. 2019 and now rests in eternal peace.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Michael Hanna, her son Charles Lee, and granddaughter Kathleen Makoski.
She is survived by her brother Dr. Paul Higgins Jr. of Silver Spring, MD ; her children Dr. Mary Hanna of Ellicott City, MD, Dr. Michael Hanna Jr. ( Dr. Barbara) of Anniston, AL, Anne Therese Hanna of Covington, and Kevin Hanna ( Diana) of Covington; grandchildren, Tara Clary of Ellicott City, MD, Dr. Jamie Hanna of New Orleans, LA, Rachel Hanna of New Orleans, LA, Dr. Rebecca Hanna of Dallas, TX, Dr. Alex Hanna of Tuscaloosa, AL, Johnny Hanna of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Paul Hanna of Harrisonburg, VA. She is also survived by special friends Shannon and Rick Fuhrman and their little pup “UVA”, whose kindness and care brightened her later years.
Born in Frostburg, MD, truly a coalminer’s daughter, who began her nursing career at Gallinger Memorial Hospital (now DC General) where she met her future husband. A wartime courtship and marriage followed. While her husband was an embattled army physician in the South Pacific Theater, she completed her nursing studies while caring for her twin babies. As her children grew older, she joined her husband in his medical practice, serving as his nurse for many years.
She was a beloved mother who treasured her Catholic faith and Irish heritage. She was an avid gardener whose flowers were resplendent, particularly her roses which adorned the altar of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
After she retired, she traveled the world with her daughter Anne Therese, her constant companion. They visited their ancestral Irish homeland, the gardens of Costa Rica, national parks, and the glaciers of Alaska. These trips provided an opportunity to see many wonderful places and things.
A memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
