Andrew Middleton pitched Alleghany out of a losing streak Tuesday at Mountaineer Field.
The freshman allowed just four hits and one run in a 97-pitch complete game, leading Alleghany to a 5-1 win over James River.
The win snapped a 12-game skid for the Mountaineers, dating all the way back to a March 11 season-opening win over Covington.
“Andrew did a great job on the mound and we committed no errors,” said AHS coach Gary Rice. “Good defense and pitching are the keys to winning ballgames.
“We’ve been preaching defense all year, and we’re getting better, but we still need to do a better job swinging the bats,” he added.
Alleghany scored all five of their runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
Tanner Skidmore, Jacob Clarke, Brian Broughman and Drew Hayslett all had hits in the inning, Broughman’s being a huge two-run single through the middle.
Ethyn Kimberlin plated another run with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Gabe Sebastino had two hits for James River (2-6 TRD, 2-13 overall).
Alleghany (1-7 TRD, 2-13 overall) goes to Carroll County on Friday.
Mounties, Glenvar Finish Suspended Game
Five days after it started, the Glenvar Highlanders on Wednesday finished off a five-inning 17-2 Three Rivers win over the Mountaineers in a game that was suspended after three innings Friday.
Cameron Wiley finished what he started on the mound for the Highlanders, allowing just two hits — both on Wednesday.
Dylan Nicely and Clarke had the Alleghany knocks.
The Highlanders had sent 21 hitters to the plate in a 16-run third before the rains came Friday, highlighted by Jeb Secrist’s two-run homer.
Tyler Smith had four hits to lead Glenvar’s 11-hit attack.
With the win, the Highlanders improved to 8-8 on the season, 6-3 in the Three Rivers District.
