EMORY — Top-seeded Abingdon dropped just eight games in the five completed matches at Emory & Henry Monday in a Class 3, Region D first round girls tennis win over Alleghany, 5-0.
The Mountaineers finished the season with a record of 7-9.
“I’m really proud of what we accomplished this season,” said first-year Alleghany head coach Nicole Fogus. “Making it to the postseason is always the goal, and the fact that we did it with a bunch of kids who had never played tennis before this season was exceptional.
“But we also have a ton to work on for next year,” she added. “It’ll be tough to fill Kaylie (Hampton) and Vanna’s (Hoke) positions, but we have a good group coming back.”
Tori Meeks will be the No. 7 seed in Friday’s Class 3, Region D singles tournament and will join Nicole Gray as the No. 7 seed in the doubles tournament that begins next Tuesday.
Both events will be hosted at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech.
