IRON GATE — Iron Gate Town Council paid homage Thursday to police and first responders who responded to a shooting incident in town on March 20.
A proclamation approved by council reads in part: “Whereas, on the night of March 20, 2019, residents of Iron Gate became the victims of a gunman firing random shots from inside of his home into the surrounding properties, streets and neighborhoods.”
Police and first responders recognized by council include: the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, the Covington Division of Police, the Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Helicopter Service, Virginia State Police, the Clifton Forge Police Department, and the Iron Gate Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
“With their quick response, outstanding assessment and management of the scene, the incident was brought to a close with no loss of life or bodily injury and minimal property damage; and whereas, these individuals on a daily basis serve and protect the citizens of Iron Gate, the Alleghany Highlands and surrounding localities,” the proclamation said.
Accepting on behalf of their departments were: Sgt. Chris Fisher of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office; Chief Chad Wickline, Clifton Forge Police Department; and Major Chris Smith, interim chief of police, Covington Division of Police.
As a result of the incident, police charged Marshall Dale Meadows, 59, with attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and felony use of a firearm.
