CLIFTON FORGE — The Shenandoah Academy of Dance, directed by Missy Belcher Floyd, returns to delight the entire family with “The Nutcracker” with two scheduled performances; Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.
One of the Historic Masonic Theatre’s most popular performances of last season, the ballet is based on the E.T.A. Hoffman tale, “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice.”
Although the performance seen on stage today differs in detail from the original story, the basic plot remains the same.
Clara dreams of her beloved Nutcracker winning the battle against the Mouse King, journeys through the land of the Snow Queen and her King, and arrives in the Land of Sweets and the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The ballet, set to the timeless Tchaikovsky score, was first performed in 1892 by the Mariinsky Theatre, home to the Kirov Ballet.
New this year, the opportunity to capture the moment by having your family or your children’s photo taken with Santa by master photographer Chuck Almarez at the end of the performance for $5.
Missy Belcher Floyd, director, will continue to invite participants of all ages and levels of experience from local dance studios to perform in this production, as well. Experience the magic that is “The Nutcracker” with the Shenandoah Ballet this December.
The Nutcracker will take place on the stage of the John E. Hillert Auditorium. Tickets are available online at www.historicmasonictheatre.com, by calling the theatre box office at (540) 862- 5655, or at the ticket booth prior to the performance.
