Alleghany won six of eight matches against rival Covington in the Cougar Den Tuesday night, posting a 54-7 dual wrestling win.
The Mountaineers started the night with a 60-18 trouncing of Parry McCluer, while Covington won the unofficial Pioneer District crown with a 39-36 win over the Blues.
“It was a good night of wrestling,” said Cougar coach Randy Phillips. “There were a lot of competitive intense matches.”
That included four entertaining bouts that went the distance between the area teams.
The headliner was a rematch between Alleghany’s Travis Fridley and Covington’s Kent Bullock.
Bullock decisioned Fridley Saturday in the finals of the News Leader tournament at Stuarts Draft.
“When we looked at that match on film, (assistant) coach (Will) Fields saw an opening there that Kent kept exploiting on Travis,” said Alleghany coach Dale Burdette. “The whole goal was to take that away the entire match.”
The two went the distance on Tuesday.
And finally in the final 30 second segment of the overtime progression, it was Fridley that found a way.
Because he scored the first point of the match — a second period escape — Fridley got the choice in that 30 seconds.
Choosing bottom, an escape would win it. Or if Bullock could ride out the 30 seconds, he would win.
Fridley maneuvered out just eight seconds in.
“Travis has an unbelievable gas tank,” said Burdette. “He outworks everybody in the (practice) room, he really does. That benefitted him right there tonight. He knew he could go all the bonus periods and be alright. Luckily we had choice that match.”
That second period choice of down led to Fridley scoring the first point.
“I hate for it to come down to that,” Phillips said. “It was a tough one. But it’s good for Kent because now he got to experience that and the next time when he’s on the state level he’ll know that first point is very important.”
In the first match of the dual, Alleghany’s Randy Paxton came back from a 3-0 hole to decision Jeran Smallwood, 8-6.
The Cougars won back-to-back decisions at 152 and 160
George Young, who was down 3-0 early, outlasted Ivan Dobbs, 6-3, and Hunter Tallman won a 15-7 decision over Lucas Rogers.
“Hunter had lost to Rogers last time,” Phillips said. “He really was coming back for payback. He worked hard all week long. He saw where we faultered last time and pushed himself. George had a really tight match too. He’s had some really hard match-ups all year long. It’s great to see him get a couple wins back to back.”
Ethyn Kimberlin, Matt Howell, Ryan Shue and Dontae Miller all posted pins for the Mountaineers.
Weather permitting, Coving-ton will host the War of the Wrestlers Saturday at the Cougar Den, while the Mountaineers travel to the Warriors Invitational at Western Albemarle.
News Leader Tourney
Alleghany placed third as a team, had seven finalists and won two individual titles Saturday in the 31st Daily News Leader tournament at Stuarts Draft.
Matt Howell dominated at 182 with a pair of first-period pins to win his title, while Victor Goldberg also had a pair of pins on his way to the 113 pound championship.
Bullock won Covington’s lone title with his 12-6 decision of Fridley in the 170 pound final.
