COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - The Covington Lumberjacks will welcome Special Olympics athletes to Casey Field on Sunday, June 14, for a memorable evening of baseball and community spirit.
The festivities begin at 4 p.m. as Special Olympics participants take part in several pregame activities. Athletes will sing the National Anthem, join Lumberjacks players on the field during introductions, and have the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch.
The event is designed to celebrate inclusion and provide a special experience for participating athletes while bringing the community together through baseball. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and help recognize the Special Olympics athletes as they take center stage alongside the Lumberjacks.

The Covington Lumberjacks Bark in the Park night has been rescheduled for June 16 at 6:30 p.m. after the original game was cancelled due to weather. Fans are encouraged to bring donations of dog and cat food for the Alleghany Humane Society, which will also be on hand with adoptable pets. Guests are welcome to bring their four-legged friends as long as they are on a leash.

Doris Hagedon

Doris Marcelle Hanson Hagedon passed peacefully from this life July 1, 2025.

She was born March 19, 1923, on the Hanson farm in Yellow Medicine County, Minn., to Mandt Roy Hanson and Anna Peterson Hanson.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Clarkfield Norwegian Lutheran Church. After graduating from Clarkfield High School, she attended the University of Minnesota followed by radio and teletype school in Minneapolis. In 1943 United Airlines hired 20 students including Doris to attend class in Oakland, Calif.  While on the train to California, she met George Hagedon whom she married on August 28,1944. When the class finished, Doris was assigned to the airport in Bellingham Wash. and George, who was in the Navy, was stationed on the SS San Juan in the Pacific. When he returned from the war in 1945, they moved to Harbor Beach, Mich., his hometown where they lived for twenty years. Three children, Signe, Shawn, and Sam were born there. They moved to Nekoosa, Wis., and then to Covington, Va. In Covington, Doris became active in the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed being a member of the Edgemont Church Women’s Club.

She was an active volunteer for the Christmas Mother program. She enjoyed water aerobics at the YMCA and playing cards.

She is survived by two of her children, Signe and Sam, and nine grandchildren and thirteen great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Marilyn Hanson, of Watsonville, Calif., and many cousins and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; brother Arvey Hanson; son Shawn; and grandson Christopher.

A memorial service will be held at Edgemont Presbyterian Church on Aug. 7,2025 at 11:00 a.m.

Donations may be made to Edgemont Presbyterian at 2306 South Church St., Covington, Va., or St. John United Methodist Church Ret’s Retreat, P.O. Box 129, Avon, N.C. 27915.
