Covington City Schools are closed for the rest of the week due to widespread illnesses.
School officials decided Wednesday to close schools today and Friday for a deep cleaning of facilities.
High student absentee rates led to the decision, Superintendent Melinda Snead-Johnson said.
“Covington City Public Schools is dedicated to promoting a healthy environment for its students and staff and we will be using these two days off to clean and disinfect our school buildings,” Snead-Johnson said in a memorandum issued Wednesday afternoon.
Deep cleaning procedures include the use of more heavy-duty sanitation supplies, with a particular focus on restrooms and high touch areas.
Covington isn’t the first school division to close in response to widespread illnesses. Bath County schools closed Tuesday and Wednesday to allow custodial staff an opportunity to clean and disinfect facilities.
Bath County school officials extended the closure through Thursday and Friday “due to sustained student and staff illnesses,” Superintendent Sue Hirsh said Wednesday.
