COVINGTON, Va. (VR) The Alleghany Highlands continues to showcase its community strength through local sports achievements, charitable efforts, and civic pride, highlighting the region’s commitment to supporting its residents and local organizations. There has been so many positive things going on in our area to be proud of, and here is just a small portion of them.

Let us begin with the Covington Lumberjacks baseball team. They delivered an inspiring comeback victory this week, defeating the Winchester Royals 6-3 in a thrilling late-inning rally. Key players Dariel Castillo and Victor Sanchez led the offensive charge, with Sanchez’s three-run homer proving decisive. The team’s bullpen performance was particularly noteworthy, providing crucial support during the game’s critical moments. Local charitable organizations are making significant impacts across the community.

Andy Craft, along with several other car enthusiasts and Kars Unlimited members, demonstrated their commitment to community support by organizing a car show, which resulted in a nice donation for the Alleghany Humane Society. The local Tractor Supply further contributed to the cause by donating a substantial amount of dog and cat food to support the shelter’s ongoing operations. The Alleghany Cruisers held their annual car show for scholarships in law enforcement.

A unique community initiative gaining attention is the network of “blessing boxes” throughout the Highlands. These community-supported food and hygiene product stations operate on a simple principle: those who can give, do, and those who need, can take. Notable locations include a box near the Depot on Main Street in Clifton Forge and another maintained by resident Aaron Peters on McAllister Drive in Covington.

City Manager Allen Dressler and local officials continue to prioritize community development and maintenance. Their efforts have transformed Covington’s appearance, with particular attention to Main Street and the surrounding areas. The city’s commitment to beautification and infrastructure
has been widely praised by many residents and visitors alike. “Our city has undergone remarkable improvements,” Dressler said. “We’re dedicated to creating a welcoming and attractive environment for both residents and visitors.”

The community’s economic vitality is increasingly evident through its diverse and growing local business ecosystem. Main Street and the surrounding areas now feature a range of businesses that contribute to the local economy and provide unique shopping and dining experiences for both locals and tourists.

Local leaders emphasize the importance of community support, encouraging residents to explore and patronize local establishments. The growing number of businesses represents not just economic opportunity but a testament to the community’s resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. The recent community update reflects a broader narrative of collaborative growth and mutual support.

From sports achievements to charitable initiatives, the Alleghany Highlands demonstrates how small communities can create a meaningful impact through collective effort. The blessing boxes serve as a particularly strong example of community solidarity. These simple yet effective resources allow residents to directly support one another, bridging economic gaps and fostering a sense of shared responsibility. The charitable car show and donation, along with Tractor Supply’s further underscore the community’s commitment to supporting the local community. Such initiatives not only provide material support to organizations like the Humane Society but also strengthen community bonds. The Lumberjacks’ victory offers more than just a sports story. It represents the community’s resilience, teamwork, and ability to overcome challenges, which are qualities that extend far beyond the baseball diamond.

City officials and community leaders continue to work collaboratively to enhance the area’s quality of life. Their ongoing efforts in infrastructure
improvement, community support, and economic development position the Highlands as a model of small-town revitalization. As the community moves forward, the focus remains on supporting local businesses, maintaining pride, and creating opportunities for all residents. The combination of sports achievements, charitable efforts, and community initiatives paints a promising picture of the Alleghany Highlands’ future. This community update
serves as a reminder that strength lies not just in individual achievements but in collective support and shared goals.

When we focus on the positive in our community, it is easily found. Come back every week to see more of the Alleghany Highlands, good news, and positive vibes.
