LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools (AHPS) has canceled summer school classes for today, Tuesday, June 24, due to a mechanical issue at Mountain View Elementary School. Information about today’s summer school cancellation was announced earlier to families.
The issue arose around 5:40 a.m. when a lighting ballast in a first-floor hallway caught fire. The school’s fire suppression system quickly extinguished the flames, successfully preventing the fire from spreading.
Although the fire was contained, it caused water damage and left residual smoke in portions of the building. Maintenance crews are actively working to remove the water and ventilate the affected areas to ensure the school is safe for occupancy. Similar precautionary inspections are also being conducted at Clifton Academy.
Out of an abundance of caution and with student and staff safety as the top priority, AHPS has canceled all summer school classes at both Mountain View and Clifton Academy for Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26.
Summer school will resume on Monday, June 30, at Jeter-Watson Elementary School. The schedule will remain unchanged, with classes running from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Mountain View and Clifton Academy will remain closed until maintenance and cleanup efforts are completed.
Summer Food Service Program: Families of students enrolled in summer school may pick up a six-day meal packet on Thursday, June 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Clifton Academy. Children do not need to be present; eligibility will be verified using the summer school enrollment roster.
AHPS will provide additional updates as needed and thanks our local emergency responders and the AHPS custodial, maintenance, and administrative teams for their quick and effective response.
