ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS, Va. (VR) – The 2025 Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon, held this past weekend along the breathtaking Jackson River Scenic Trail, welcomed a record-breaking 482 runners, making it the largest event in the race’s history. Participants traveled from 23 states across the country — from Hawaii to Maine and everywhere in between — to experience one of Virginia’s most scenic and welcoming race experiences.

The event, which includes a marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K, continues to grow in popularity thanks to its picturesque course, strong community support, and reputation for exceptional hospitality.

The full marathon is also a Boston Marathon qualifying race, attracting serious runners looking for a fast, flat course and a beautiful destination race experience.

Nearly 80 local volunteers generously donated their time to help make the weekend a success. Local EMS & law enforcement teams were also on hand to ensure the safety and well-being of every participant — their dedication and professionalism are sincerely appreciated.

A special thank-you goes to Alleghany County Parks and Recreation for their outstanding work maintaining the Jackson River Scenic Trail and trailheads. Their ongoing commitment ensures that the trail remains in excellent condition for both residents and visitors year-round, and their efforts played a key role in the success of this year’s race.

“This year’s race exceeded all expectations — from the record number of participants to the incredible support from our volunteers, sponsors, and the entire community,” said Makayla Nobles, Event Coordinator for the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. “It’s rewarding to see how
much this event has grown and the positive impact it has on the Alleghany Highlands. We’re already looking forward to making next year even better.”
The economic impact was also significant, with the event filling nearly every hotel room in the Alleghany Highlands and drawing new visitors to the region’s shops, restaurants, and attractions.

This year’s event was made possible thanks to the generous support of sponsors: Alleghany County Parks & Recreation, ALCOVA Mortgage, Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital, Cucci’s Pizzeria, Dominion Energy, Highlands Community Bank, Ingevity, Jackson River Community Credit Union,
LewisGale Hospital Alleghany, Smurfit WestRock, Roanoke Outside, Williams Fabrication, Inc, and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism.

“The continued growth of this race showcases the power of outdoor recreation as both a community builder and an economic driver,” said Josh Taylor, Executive Director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. “We are incredibly proud to host an event that brings people
together, highlights our region’s natural beauty, and supports local businesses.”

Plans are already underway for the 2026 Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon, with even more participants expected. For more information on future events, please reach out to Alleghany Highlands Chamber at 540-962-2178.
