Virginia State Police Investigating Fatal Botetourt County Crash

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (VR) – Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle crash which resulted in two fatalities. The crash occurred Monday, (May 15) at 6:02 p.m. in Botetourt County.

A 2020 Volvo tractor trailer was on the right shoulder of Interstate 81 at the 166-mile marker with a mechanical issue, when the tractor trailer was struck in the rear by a 2014 Mercedes Benz.

Two of the passengers, Sameer Baig Mirza, 22, was wearing his seatbelt, and Mustafa Baig Mirza, 15, was not wearing his seatbelt. Both passengers were from Springfield, Va. and died at the scene.

The driver, Taaha K. Mohammad, received non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Charges are pending.

The driver of the Volvo was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
