Covington senior Jabari Williams and junior Shaun Smith Jr., have been named to the Virginia High School League Class 1 all-state football team.
Williams landed a spot on the second team as a defensive end, while Smith earned a second-team running back spot.
“Both guys are first-team, all-state caliber players,” said Covington head coach Chris Jones. “The process is very subjective.
“They both had great seasons for us on both sides of the football,” Jones added. “Obviously we’re really excited to have Shaun back for another season and are looking forward to Jabari playing at the next level.”
Williams had 72 tackles for the Cougars and added 10 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns from his tight end position.
Smith racked up 1,796 yards rushing and another 280 receiving yards on 10 catches. The junior accounted for 27 touchdowns and added 44 tackles, including 16 for loss.
“Besides their playing ability, they are two good young men,” said Jones. “Their character matches their talent on the field.”
Riverheads running back Zac Smiley was the Class 1 Offensive Player of the Year in the state, while defensive end Lee Peoples of Galax was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year.
Riverheads head coach Robert Casto, who directed the Gladiators to their fourth straight Class 1 state title, was the Coach of the Year.
