Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. A  drop-off site in Covington will open next week as part of a gift-giving project for children around the world.
Operation Christmas Child, a project by the organization Samaritan’s Purse, will be collecting shoebox gifts for children  Nov. 18 to Nov. 25.
Covington Bible Church will serve as a drop-off location in the Highlands. The church is located at 2140 S. Carpenter Dr.
Shoeboxes can be dropped off during National Collection Week. The operating hours for dropping off filled shoeboxes are:  Nov. 18-22: 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 23:  9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 24:  1 to 3 p.m., and Nov. 25:  8 to 10 a.m.
Pre-printed shoeboxes are available at Cakes Your Way at 214 W. Main St. in Covington. Filled boxes can be returned to the business during collection week. Cakes Your Way is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Last year, 2,133 shoebox gifts from the Alleghany Highlands area were sent to Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Angola and other areas of the world. Local organizers are hoping to exceed that number this year.
Instructions for what to include in the shoebox can be found at OperationChristmasChild.com or by contacting Laurie or Jon Fitzgerald at (540) 968-1724.
