NEW CASTLE — Covington’s girls had two games postponed last week because of a flu outbreak on the team.
Tuesday night, the Cougars got back on the floor, but still not at full strength.
Amiah Hunter scored a game-high 16 points, Kim Via added nine and Ariel Barber scored eight, pushing Covington to a 49-44 Pioneer District girls basketball road win at Craig County.
The Cougars were without the services of point guard Elaishja Helton, who is still under the weather.
The winners used a 16-3 second quarter advantage to take a 28-18 halftime lead, before fending off a Craig comeback attempt late.
Autumn Hutchison had 16 points for the Rockets (1-5 Pioneer District, 2-7 overall), while Maddy Oliver added 11.
Covington (4-0 Pioneer, 7-6 overall) is alone on top of the Pioneer District standings, one game clear of Eastern Montgomery and two games in front of Parry McCluer.
The Cougars play at Narrows tonight. The Green Wave handed Parry McCluer their second straight district loss on Tuesday, 47-44.
Craig County was a 34-25 junior varsity winner Tuesday.
Summer Huffman had 14 points for the Rockets.
Harlie Reynolds led Covington with eight points, Kayla Bartley had seven, Christina Terrell and Breanna Reynolds both scored four and Raven Heighter added two.
