COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Junior Varsity Cougars roared to a commanding 10-1 victory over Northside on Wednesday night, thanks to a clutch offensive performance and a standout showing from Bronson Shinault.
Shinault was a force at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single, helping to power an explosive Cougar offense. The freshman standout wasted no time, doubling in the first inning, singling in the third, and capping the night with another double in the sixth that drove in a run.
The game remained close until Alleghany broke things wide open with an eight-run rally in the sixth inning. The offensive outburst saw contributions from across the lineup—Ben Skidmore, Talyn Elliott, Lennox Webb, Zane George, Carson Cosby, and Shinault all drove in runs as the Cougars strung together timely hits and aggressive base running.
Northside got on the board first in the opening frame with a groundout RBI from Jackson Slate. Alleghany quickly responded in the bottom half, tying the game with a Skidmore groundout RBI.
The Cougars took control in the fifth inning when George singled to drive in the go-ahead run, giving Alleghany a 2-1 lead. From there, the bats caught fire.
On the mound, George earned the win with a gritty five-inning outing, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five. Despite some control struggles—walking seven—he managed to keep Northside’s offense in check. Joel Bradshaw came in to close the door, tossing two scoreless innings and allowing no hits.
Offensively, the Cougars racked up 10 hits. Cosby, Webb, and Skidmore each drove in two runs, while George went 2-for-4 and contributed a key RBI.
Northside struggled to convert scoring chances despite drawing 10 walks. Harris and Sam Vann led the way with three walks apiece, and Harris added three stolen bases.
After the game, Cougar head coach Seth Bradley praised his team’s resilience. “The guys played very well tonight,” Bradley said. “It took us a while to string our hits together but the guys kept battling and we were finally able to capitalize and have a big inning. Very proud of how they competed from beginning to end!”
