BATH COUNTY, Va. (VR) – In what can only be described as a standout performance, the Bath County Varsity Chargers delivered a statement win over Craig County on Tuesday, securing a 7-3 victory in a game that highlighted both strong pitching and explosive offense. With a total of 10 hits and an eye-popping 11 stolen bases, Bath County made it clear that they are a team to be reckoned with.
Leading the charge was the ever-impressive Issac Ingram, who had an outstanding game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. His offensive contributions were a key factor in Bath County’s early success. Ingram’s presence was felt throughout the game, helping to drive the team forward and putting them in a position to control the game.
The game started with some back-and-forth action. Craig County struck first in the top of the first inning when Hunter Sowers singled to give his team an early 1-0 lead. But Bath County quickly responded in the bottom of the same inning. Ingram’s timely single allowed the Chargers to knot the score at one, setting the stage for what would become a dominant performance.
In the bottom of the third, Bath County broke open the game with a two-run single from Marc Durney, which gave the Chargers a 3-1 lead. A wild pitch soon after allowed Bath County to extend their lead to 4-1, and it was clear that Craig County would have to dig deep to keep up.
The pitching performance from Bath County was nothing short of exceptional. Nathan Hunt started on the mound, delivering two solid innings in which he allowed just one hit and one run, while striking out six batters. But it was Ingram, who came in for relief, who truly stole the show. Over five innings, Ingram allowed just two hits and two runs (neither earned), while striking out an incredible 12 batters. His dominance on the mound left Craig County hitters frustrated and unable to make significant contact.
On the other side, Craig County’s starter, Hunter Sowers, had a tough outing, surrendering nine hits and seven runs over four innings. Despite striking out seven, Sowers struggled to contain Bath County’s potent offense.
Beyond the stellar pitching and hitting, Bath County’s speed on the base paths was on full display. The Chargers swiped 11 bases in total, with Mason Phillips and Ingram leading the way with multiple steals each. The aggressive base running kept Craig County’s defense on edge throughout the game and played a major role in creating scoring opportunities.
Phillips was another key contributor offensively, finishing the game with three hits and two RBIs, while Durney’s two-run single in the third inning proved to be a critical turning point in the contest. Along with Ingram, Phillips, and Durney, Owen Perdue also added to the stolen base count, with multiple steals of his own.
Craig County, despite their valiant efforts, struggled to get things going offensively after their early run. Hunter Sowers went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and his teammates Mason Huffman and Jaycob Wolfe also each contributed a hit. Wolfe and Luke Potter each managed to steal multiple bases, but it wasn’t enough to mount a serious threat against Bath County’s dynamic offense and lights-out pitching. Chargers head coach, Jake Phillips was ecstatic on their win over Craig County stating “I’m excited for these guys to have another win under their belt. We pitched well, did well at the plate, but still need to work on some baserunning mistakes and take advantage of the chances we have to blow the game open.” On Thursday the Chargers will have a backyard battle with Highland County, first pitch 5pm.
