COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Cougar Varsity Baseball team put on an impressive display on Tuesday, taking down the James River Varsity Knights 6-2 in a game that highlighted their offensive firepower and dominant pitching. From start to finish, the Cougars executed in all phases of the game. The Knights took the early advantage in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a fielding error by Alleghany. Cam Saunders singled to bring in another run, giving James River a 2-0 lead. However, the Cougars wasted no time answering back.
In the bottom of the first, Alleghany exploded for four runs to take control of the game. Carson Brown was the star of the inning, first doubling to bring in two runs, then stealing home to cap off a wild sequence of events that put the Cougars up 4-2. A key error by the Knights allowed another run to cross the plate, demonstrating Alleghany’s ability to capitalize on mistakes and put pressure on their opponents early. As the game progressed, the Cougars’ offense continued to shine. In the bottom of the third inning, Tyler Jackson singled to extend the lead to 5-2. The Cougars demonstrated exceptional patience at the plate throughout the game, drawing a total of 10 walks and consistently working deep counts, keeping the Knights’ pitching staff on their heels.
Trey Cook was the standout performer on the mound for Alleghany. The senior right-hander delivered six dominant innings, allowing just four hits and two runs (none earned). His eight strikeouts and one walk showed his control and ability to neutralize the Knights’ offense. After a strong start, Jalen Raether came in for one inning of relief and shut down the Knights, striking out three batters and keeping them off the scoreboard.
On offense, Brown was a key contributor, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, including his spectacular steal of home. Tucker Phillips also stood out, leading the Cougars with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, providing steady hitting throughout the game. Raether, though not a major contributor in hits, reached base three times with walks, constantly putting pressure on the Knights’ pitchers.
The Cougars’ ability to execute offensively and on the mound was evident throughout the game. While James River managed just five hits and had a few moments of promise, the Cougars’ all-around effort kept the Knights from catching up. The Cougars’ aggressive base running and disciplined hitting were key factors in their ability to maintain control of the game.
This victory gives the Cougars a much-needed boost as they continue their push for a strong season. The boys will be back in action on Wednesday at Northside High School, first pitch 5 pm.
