WYTHEVILLE — Peyton Coe scored a game-high 20 points and Dayson McMillian added 15 more here Tuesday in George Wythe’s 77-39 victory over Covington in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1, Region C boys basketball tournament.
Coe scored 10 of his 20 in the opening quarter as the Maroons built a 25-7 lead.
Javier Yancey led Covington with 16 points, while Jacob Roldan added eight.
“We had a game plan going down there,” said CHS coach Casey Burks. “We just couldn’t make a shot and they didn’t miss a shot. They played a zone and we couldn’t shoot them out of it.”
George Wythe increased their lead to 43-19 at the half and 63-26 after three periods.
All 12 Maroons scored.
“Defensively we didn’t have the legs,” Burks said. “I think it was due to the drive and that’s why it’s so important to handle business in our district.”
George Wythe, who improved to 18-8, will go to Parry McCluer for a Friday semifinal. The Fighting Blues disposed of Grayson County in Buena Vista on Tuesday night, 48-41.
The other Region C semifinal will send Narrows, a 65-49 winner over Bland County, to Auburn, who beat Eastern Montgomery, 83-59.
Covington’s season ended with a 12-13 record.
“We were a young team this year,” said Burks, who was in his first year as the program’s head coach. “I would like to thank our seniors (Chandler Wright, Jabari Williams, Shyon Brown and Nick Henry) for all their hard work and leadership. The program is moving in the right direction.
“We have a lot of players coming back next year,” he continued. “We have a busy offseason and that’s where it starts. My first year as a varsity coach has been a learning experience. I learned a lot and grew as a coach this season. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity and I’m really looking forward to next season.”
