Mounties, Cougars Wrestle In Big Red At Riverheads

GREENVILLE — Alleghany had eight placers and finished fifth as a team in the Big Red Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday at Riverheads High School.
Covington placed ninth as a team and had five placers.
Mountaineer Matt Howell was the only local competitor advancing to the championship finals.
Howell lost a 5-2 decision to Riverheads’s Trevor Roberts in the 182 pound final.
Other AHS placers included Maddox Crance (3rd, 132 pounds), Victor Goldberg (4th, 113) Randy Paxton (4th, 120), Ethyn Kimberlin (4th, 126), Remington Tucker (5th, 145), Lucas Rogers (5th, 160) and Travis Fridley (5th, 170).
George Young placed third for the Cougars at 152 pounds and Kent Bullock’s only loss of the day came in overtime in a third place finish at 170 pounds.
Blaine Pettitt (4th, 285), Jeran Smallwood (6th, 120) and Hunter Tallman (6th, 160) also ended up on the podium for Covington.
Both the Mountaineers and Cougars are back on the mats today.
Alleghany is at Floyd County for a Three Rivers District tri-match that includes the Buffaloes and Carroll County, while Covington joins Parry McCluer for a tri at Buffalo Gap.
