This month, Covington Bible Church in Covington will be among 5,000 U.S. drop-off locations collecting shoebox gifts for children overseas during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, Nov. 18- 25.
Families, churches and groups are busy transforming empty shoeboxes into gifts of hope filled with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items.
Operation Christmas Child is a program of Samaritan’s Purse that has been in operation for over 25 years and which partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these tangible expressions of God’s love to children in need. For many of these children, it will be the first gift they have ever received.
Last year, 2,133 shoebox gifts from the Alleghany Highlands area were collected and sent to Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Angola and other areas. It is our hope to exceed that number this year to contribute to the 2019 global goal of reaching 11 million children in need.
More than 30 churches in the Alleghany Highlands, along with student and civic groups, are currently participating. Individuals who would be interested in helping may use a regular sized shoebox of their own or pick up a pre-printed shoebox at Cakes Your Way on Main Street in Covington to fill and return during drop-off week.

This ministry is something that that people of all ages from very young to senior citizens can participate in. It brings people together to make a positive worldwide impact in a physical way, as well as a spiritual one.
We want to thank every single person who is packing a box — what you are doing really does make a difference in a young person’s life! We would encourage you to consider asking someone to join you in packing a box this year!
Operating hours for dropping off filled shoeboxes at Covington Bible Church, 2140 S. Carpenter Dr., are: Nov. 18-22: 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 23: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 24: 1 to 3 p.m., and Nov. 25: 8 to 10 a.m.

The Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society has published our sixth book.
This one contains photographs of Jeter School students from 1947 through 1962. It includes sports teams, students, dances, plays, etc. Also some history on Jeter School.
The title is “Remember When? A Photographic Look at Jeter School.
It is on sale for $15.80 at the genealogical society, 515 E. Pine Street, during the days we are open:?Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism office at Highlands Centre and Family Hair Affair Beauty Shop on Monroe Avenue.
Also for sale are copies of our other five publications pertaining to local car dealerships, service stations, restaurants, businesses, families, and one book with local hunt clubs from our area.
Christmas is coming and our books make great gifts for the history buff or someone hard to buy for.
We invite anyone to come visit our library to see our vast assortment of photographs and family information from this area.
Maybe you can help us identify some of the photographs we have. You might find yourself in one of the photos.
Our membership year runs from January to December, and our dues are $15 single, $18 a couple. We invite you to become a member and to support our efforts to preserve genealogical history.
