The following press release is from Alleghany County Public Schools in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS CLOSED IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS)
Alleghany County, Virginia – In response to the rapidly evolving and unprecedented situation involving COVID-19 (coronavirus), Governor Ralph Northam announced this afternoon that all public school divisions in Virginia will be closed for a minimum period of two weeks from March 16, 2020 through March 27, 2020 with a tentative reopening date of March 30, 2020.
We realize that this action creates many questions and concerns for students, parents, and staff. Alleghany County Public Schools administration, teachers, and staff have been actively engaged in preparing for just such a scenario and have plans in place to effectively respond to such. Our focus during this time is to maintain continuity of instruction for students, continue to provide nutritious meals, and maintain the cleanliness and safety of our schools and facilities.
On Tuesday, March 17, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. all schools will be open so that students and parents can pick-up Chromebooks and chargers, report cards, any student medications stored at the school, personal belongings, and the education packets that have been prepared by instructional personnel. Other than this specific date and time, all schools will be closed during the aforementioned time period. All extra-curricular activities and athletic events (practices and games) are also cancelled while schools remain closed.
A separate communication will be forthcoming on Monday, March 16, with specifics related to the provision of meals and any general updates that are available.
Employees of Alleghany County Public Schools will receive a separate communication which will identify specific work requirements and responsibilities during the period of closure.
The situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) is unprecedented, especially given the disruption and uncertainty it has generated. We will endeavor to manage this situation as efficiently and effectively as possible. We will also strive to communicate with our entire community as this very fluid situation evolves and new information becomes available.
