LOW MOOR — Alleghany County school officials are closely monitoring developments surrounding the spread of the Coronavirus, and they are ready to implement protective measures if necessary.
“The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Virginia Department of Health have not yet released guidance specifically for K-12 schools,” Superintendent Gene Kotulka said in a letter to parents Tuesday.
In the meantime, the superintendent said custodians are working to ensure that schools throughout the county are properly cleaned and sanitized.
“Alleghany County Public Schools will ensure that each school has the proper supplies for cleaning and that school custodians are cleaning frequently-touched surfaces,” Kotulka said.
School officials are urging students and their families to maintain hygiene practices that are commonly used during the cold and flu season.
Virginia Department of Health recommendations include:
— Washing hands frequently with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand cleaner if soap and water are not available.
— Covering of the nose and mouth with a sleeve or a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
— Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
— Clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces and objects, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
— Stay home when you are sick.
“Alleghany County Public Schools has a collaborative working team that is updating plans for operational and instructional support should this virus impact our schools,” Kotulka concluded.
School officials are recommending that parents contact their health care provider if they have further questions or concerns. The Virginia Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites are also good sources for information, Kotulka said.
