CLIFTON?FORGE — The Sharon Ruritan Club recently enjoyed their annual Christmas banquet in the dining hall of Scott Hill Retirement Center, with 19 members and visitors present including Ruritan Governor Diane Swink and her husband Gary, along with other Kerrs Creek Ruritan members Julie and Eddie Crowder.
Chef Chuck and his staff prepared and served the s banquet for the occasion.
Prior to the club meeting, President Mike Layton and wife Betty surprised Katty Rumpf with a birthday cake honoring her on her 94th birthday.
The guests enjoyed several games including a guessing game won by David Nicely who then received the jar of nuts and candy for which he guessed the number closest to the total number in the jar.
Everyone then participated in a gift exchange of “Dirty Santa” allowing anyone to exchange their selected wrapped gift for someone else’s gift, all in fun and amusement of the group.
To conduct the installation of new officers, outgoing Natural Bridge District Governor Diane Swink, along with her husband Gary and friends Eddie and Julie Crowder from the Kerrs Creek Ruritan Club were guests of the Sharon Club.
Diane installed the following for the 2020 term: Mike Layton, president; Chip Snead, vice president; Linda Archer, secretary; and Phyllis Wilhelm, treasurer. The new treasurer will take over for long-time treasurer David Nicely, who has served the Sharon Club for many years.
The Sharon Club continues to look for new members even though it is experiencing some growth in membership and looks forward to a fruitful year of fun and service to the community.
Among the programs to be continued are donations to area organizations including the Clifton Forge Area Food Pantry, Virginia Boys State and Girls State programs for high school juniors, Hunters for the Hungry, Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother Program, Little League Programs, and the Santa Shop at Sharon Elementary School. One program of which the Sharon Club is particularly dedicated and proud of is the purchase and installation of Medical Alert systems for area seniors and persons needing the device for safety and reassurance when at home alone.
The club continually seeks referrals from the community for persons needing a medical alert, which is installed at no cost to the individual or family.
