Alleghany runs at the East Coast Elite meet

SALEM, Va. – Alleghany was one of 36 schools that competed at the East Coast Elite (Roanoke College #4) meet on Thursday, January 23rd at the Kerr-Cregger Field House in Salem. 
 
Between the boys’ and girls’ teams, there were five individual top 10 performances at the meet, while the school had three relay top 10 finishes as well.
 
Leigha Byers, Maggie Hensley, and Kiera Lowman, were among the only Alleghany runners with three top 10 finishes, while Faith Barron had two.
 
Lowman had the best individual overall placement for the Cougars as she finished fourth in the girls 1,000 meter run following a time of 3:08.24, while Hensley finished just behind her in sixth place after a 3:27.62 time.
 
Byers just made the top 10 in the girls 500-meter dash as she squeaked by Abbigail Byington of Abingdon High School by four-tenths of a second. 
 
Barron, Byers, Hensley, and Lowman, guided the girls 4×800 team to a third place in the 4×800 after running a time of 10:29.53. There were 16 teams in the field. Meanwhile in the 4×400, Byers, Hensley, Lowman, and Willow Morgan finished fourth out of 16 teams following a time of 4:38.24.
 
For the boys team Brycen Griffith jumped Alleghany to seventh place in the triple jump following a leap of 40-01.50. Griffith finished 19th in the long jump. Evan Bishop was also in the top 10 after his performance in the 1,600-meter run where he placed 10th overall following a time of 5:02.89.
 
In a field consisting of 20 schools, Alleghany’s boys team finished fifth in the 4×400 relay team. Bishop, Griffith, Miles Christian, and Maddox Wickline, ran a time of 3:42.75.
 
This meet closed out the regular season for Alleghany who will now compete next in the Class 3, Region C championship at the Crossroads Field House in Rockingham County on Saturday, February 15th. 
 
Crossroads Field House is located in Penn Laird, just on the outskirts of Harrisonburg. This will be the first regional championship event held at the newly built field house in Rockingham County.
