Police and school officials have determined that a Thursday incident posed no threat to schools within Covington and Alleghany County.
Schools will reopen Monday after they were closed Friday as police and school officials investigated the credibility of a threat that was posted on social media late Thursday.
The post was reported to administrators and a school resource officer at Covington High School by a student. The post was traced to Greenbrier County, W.Va., where schools were closed Wednesday through Friday because of widespread illnesses.
The threat was not school specific and schools in Alleghany County and Covington were closed Friday as a precaution while police conducted their investigation.
“This investigation concluded that this was not a credible threat,” Alleghany County School Superintendent Gene Kotulka and Covington Superintendent Melinda Snead-Johnson said in a joint statement Friday afternoon.
“Alleghany County Public Schools and Covington City Public Schools are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors,” the statement said.
Bath County schools opened two hours late Friday because of the weather. The delayed opening was not related to the situation in Alleghany County and Covington.
