HOT SPRINGS — Bath County High School has been approved as an on-line testing site for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ driver learner’s permit exam.
BCHS driving instructor Kris Phillips recently conducted the inaugural on-line permit testing.
This effort was facilitated with technology support from Mark Hall and Ed Ozols and the proctoring assistance of Tammy Layne, BCHS librarian.
The exam was monitored and evaluated by Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles personnel from Richmond. The monitors were complimentary of the process.
Students must still go to Covington to present identification, take a photo and complete the paperwork.
One successful student stated that he was glad to have the opportunity to test in familiar surroundings. He has since completed the rest of the process and is now a permitted driver.
One successful student said it was a valuable learning experience. He now has a much better idea of what to expect on the test and can better prepare while he has the opportunity for further instruction through the BCHS Driver Education program.
The Bath County School Board was updated on this new opportunity for students during the January meeting on Tuesday.
To date, four students have taken the test at BCHS.
“We’ve been working on it for a couple of years,” Superintendent Sue Hirsh said.
The school board was also updated on recent successes on band students.
The following students auditioned for District Band and were accepted into the ensemble.
Concert Band: Sarah Eaton, clarinet.
Middle School (eighth grade): Natalie White, flute, and Sadie Alphin, alto saxophone.
The District Band event is scheduled for Jan. 31/Feb. 1 at Harrisonburg High School.
“The band continues to perform exceptionally well,” Hirsh said.
