Robert Dickson Tigrett, Jr., 95, of Covington, died Wednesday, February 12, 2020.
Bob was born September 2, 1924 in Greenbrier County, WV, the son of Sarah Frances Tigrett and Robert Tigrett.
During his adolescence, he lived with his mother and sister, Annie, in the home of his maternal grandparents, The Rev. Henry Baker Smith and Mary Anderson Smith.
Drafted into the Army in 1943, Bob seized the opportunity to become a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired from the Virginia National Guard as captain in 1966. Additionally, he was terminal manager for Smith’s Transfer in Covington and retired in 1984 after thirty-eight years of service.
Bob discovered his talent for woodcarving in the 1970’s and his wife, Edna, used her talent for painting many of his work of art. Together, they displayed this art at local craft shows and exhibits. Bob was also an avid gardener and enjoyed landscaping and growing a variety of outdoor and indoor plants. He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church and later Granbery United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Frances (Annie) Laughlin. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Edna Keyser Tigrett, they were married July 16, 1947; his daughter, Julia (Benny) Williams, sons Robert III (Caroline) and James. Also surviving are grandchildren, Casey Williams, Katie Smith and Lauren McConnell as well as 8 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Granbery United Methodist Church with Rev. Sung Yoo officiating. Burial will be at Alleghany Memorial Park.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
A luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall of Granbery United Methodist Church.
The family is most grateful for dear friends and neighbors, John and Candy Barnes, for their many acts of kindness through the years. Additionally, we want to thank devoted caregivers, Martha Peters, Theresa Snead and Mildred Johnson.
