BUENA VISTA — Turn the calendar back six years.
That was the last time the Covington girls beat Parry McCluer.
Until Wednesday night!
The Lady Cougars outscored their hosts 17-9 in the final quarter, knocking off the Fighting Blues, 41-31, in a huge Pioneer District contest.
The win lifted Covington to 8-2 in the Pioneer (11-8 overall), just one game in the loss column back of front-running Eastern Montgomery (9-1).
The Cougars close the regular season with Bath County at home tonight and Highland County on the road Friday. The Mustangs have Craig County tonight and Parry McCluer Friday.
A tie for first place would mean a one-game playoff for the title and top seed for the Region C tournament.
Cristi Persinger had 11 points for the winners and Elaishja Helton also hit double figures with 10.
Amiah Hunter scored nine, seven coming in the big fourth quarter.
“We got off to a slow start,” said CHS?coach Roy Redmon. “We came out playing man-to-man and number 25 (Grayce Henson) scored early so we went back into a 2-3 and 1-3-1, stopped that entry inside and made them shoot from outside.”
Covington led 24-22 after three periods, but widened the gap in the fourth.
The win snapped a Parry McCluer 12-game win streak over the Lady Cougars that dates back to January of 2014.
“Our defense tonight was super solid,” Redmon added. “Extremely proud of our effort tonight.”
Grayce Henson scored 12 points for Parry McCluer (8-3 Pioneer District, 8-10 overall), while Anna Claytor added 11.
The Covington jayvees started the night with a 16-8 win.
Harlie Reynolds had six points for the Cougars, Raven Heighter scored four, Jasolyn Owens and Breanna Reynolds scored two apiece and both Christina Terrell and Kayla Bartley had one each.
Covington led 11-3 at halftime.
