The Covington Woman’s Club held a monthly general meeting Monday, Nov. 18, at Ganbery Memorial United Methodist Church in Covington.
Club President Cynthia Baroody called the meeting to order, and welcomed Master Sgt. Robert Trice as a guest. Greeter was Lisa Cole.
Bea Kasnick led the pledges to the flag of the United States of America and the flag of Virginia.
Anita Proffitt introduced Trice, who also serves as director of Support Services at Boys Home of Virginia.
Trice talked about his growing up years and the influence Boys Home had on his life. He chose to join the United States Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Master Sgt. before completing his 20 years of service.
He stated that at Boys Home, “A successful man has to start somewhere,” and that “the mission is to help each resident strive toward becoming a productive member of society by developing his potential spiritually, mentally, physically, and socially.”
The home can accommodate 58-60 young men, and the current enrollment is 55. Their ages range from 8-17 years of age.
Elaine Brelsford, new member and an employee of Boys Home, brought along a trifold poster depicting events at Boys Home. The poster provided information about how community members could help spread the word about this home that has been creating an environment for success for over 100 years.
In honor of Veteran’s Day, new member and Navy veteran Shawn Wright gave a presentation about the “America’s White Table.”
Wright explained the table has a place setting for one, and is a table for all POW/MIA veterans. The aim is that no one is forgotten, so long as there is one left in whom the memory remains. The table is present at all official events and no one ever sits there.
Secretary Charlotte Williamson read the minutes of the September meeting and they were approved.
Corresponding Secretary Harriet Byers read a thank you note from Safehomes Executive Director Leyna Hansley for the donations made in September. Treasurer Gayle Kitchen submitted a report which was filed for review.
Art Chairman Jeanie Morrissette has been in touch with the schools regarding art for the Student Art Show to be held in February. Writing Chairman Debbie Rose has sent letters to the schools regarding the writing contest.
President Baroody inducted Debby Amick as a new member. It is hoped that all the new members could be present at the December 7 brunch for a photo of all of them together. The Christmas Mother Holly Peters will be invited.
Members brought winter coats and interview clothing to the meeting for the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Roadrunner Cubby. Treasurer Gayle Kitchen and Secretary Charlotte Williamson will deliver the items.
First Vice President Lisa Cole presented plans for the December 7 Christmas Brunch which will be catered by Burke House Eatery. The menu will include quiche, salad, dessert and drink for a cost of $15.
The event will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 11:30 a.m. Members should bring their volunteer record to turn in at this meeting.
