LANE AND ROAD CLOSURES SCHEDULED FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENTS ON ROUTE 220 IN BOTETOURT COUNTY
Route 696 (Locust Bottom Road) will close at intersection with Route 220
SALEM – As part of the Route 220 Safety Improvement Project from Eagle Rock to Iron Gate in Botetourt County, two culverts will be replaced along Route 220 (Botetourt Road) in the vicinity of Route 696 (Locust Bottom Road). As a result, lane closures on Route 220 will be in place and Locust Bottom Road will be closed at its intersection with Route 220.
Beginning the week of February 10, Route 220 will be reduced to one lane with flaggers controlling traffic during daytime and nighttime hours in the vicinity of Route 696 (Locust Bottom Road and Burhman Road). Crews will be building a temporary lane that will accommodate two lanes of traffic during the culvert replacements. During the week of March 2, traffic will be shifted back into a two-lane pattern and remain in this configuration until the culverts have been replaced.
Also beginning the week of February 10, Locust Bottom Road will be closed at its intersection with Route 220 until the culverts have been replaced. A detour will be in place for Locust Bottom Road traffic onto Route 220. For access to northbound Route 220, drivers should take westbound Locust Bottom Road to Route 633 (Glen Wilton Road). To access southbound Route 220, drivers will use westbound Locust Bottom Road to Route 622 (Prices Bluff Road). Locust Bottom Road is expected to re-open by early April.
In addition, drivers on Route 696 (Burhman Road) will still be able to access Route 220 during the culvert replacements. However, Burhman Road drivers should expect delays as flaggers will be controlling traffic at the intersection with Route 220 until the week of March 2.
As the Route 220 Safety Improvement Project continues, drivers should expect delays due to one-lane flagging operations in several locations from Eagle Rock to Iron Gate. Drivers are cautioned to slow down and pay close attention as workers will be present in work zones in and along this curvy stretch of Route 220. The speed limit is reduced to 45 miles per hour and wide loads are not permitted on this section of Route 220 in northern Botetourt County.
Weather permitting, the two culvert replacements on Route 220 are expected to be completed in early April and the overall project is expected to be completed in fall 2021.
