Mrs. Betty Jean Welcher Toombs, age 91, a lifelong resident of Covington, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2020, while visiting her daughter in Chandler, AZ.
Betty was born January 20, 1929, daughter of the late Hal C. Welcher and Virgie May Welcher of Covington.
She was a graduate of Covington High School and a faithful member at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church.  On June 27, 1947, Betty wed George E. Toombs, Sr. and they enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage until his death on December 12, 2006.
During her working career, Mrs. Toombs was employed at numerous establishments in Covington.  She managed offices for Dr. Fletcher, Dr. Woodhouse, Dr. Coombs and Dr. Gilbert.  Her last employer was the accounting firm of R.L. Persinger.
Betty enjoyed her work with the Clothes Closet at McAllister Church, attending Sunday school and circle with lifelong friends.  She was an avid quilter and loved working with friends on new pieces.
Mrs. Toombs is survived by her children, Sharon Gay Jones and George E. Toombs, Jr.; a godchild, Jeannie Eckhardt; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Rev. Jim Moss officiating.
Those wishing to attend the service should assemble at Cedar Hill Cemetery by 1:45 P.M.
The family will receive friends at any time at the residence of Mrs. Toombs, 631 E. Kline Street, Covington.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the organ fund at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church, 900 N. Alleghany Avenue, Covington, VA 24426.  The music programs at the church were always enjoyed by Mrs. Toombs.
We will plan a celebration of her life service at a later date.
Local arrangements are being handled by Loving Funeral Home; www.lovingfuneralhome1913.com.
