Mr. Loui Donald Elfrink, 82, of Palm Harbor, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at the Villas of Belleair, Clearwater, Fla. He was the husband of Virginia Lee Rogers Elfrink.
Mr. Elfrink was born December 15, 1927 in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Loui Fairlee Elfrink and Viola Mary Elfrink. He served his country as a member of the United States Marines during World War II, where he attained the rank of Sergeant before transferring to the United States Air Force Reserve. Mr. Elfrink received specialized training as an Intel Officer and Intel Photo Officer and served during the Vietnam War. A distinguished serviceman, on May 9, 1966, he attained the rank of Major and throughout his career he received numerous awards and decorations including National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, World War II Victory Medal, Air Force Reserve Medal, Small Arms Expert Markmanship Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
In addition to his wife, Virginia Lee Rogers Elfrink, Mr. Elfrink is survived by three sons, Loui Donald Elfrink Jr. of Tulsa, Okla., David Elfrink of San Francisco, Calif., Greg Elfrink of Palm Harbor; one daughter, Suzanne Bernhardt of Canton, Ga.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Alleghany Memorial Park with the Rev. Doug Hollenbeck officiating.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
