The Covington girls basketball team held a 38-35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter Saturday against Parry McCluer only to see the Blues outscore them 18-11 in the final frame to pull off a 53-49 comeback win over the Lady Cougars at the Cougar Den.
Despite losing the game, both teams had one common opponent – breast cancer – as they were “Playing for a Cure” to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
“It was a good day of basketball,” said Cougar coach Mark Pifer. “We played well and we were able to raise a pretty good chunk of money. We really want to thank Parry McCluer High School for participating and the administration of both our school and Parry McCluer for letting us reschedule the game for Saturday.”
The teams played with a pink ball and it did not show the Cougars much love as they shot 33 percent (17 for 51) from the field and committed 23 turnovers for the game.
Covington took a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and led 26-21 at the half.
Shanice Laws led the Lady Cougars with a 20 point, 13 rebound double-double. Autumn Phillips and Mary Woodson added nine points each with Phillips adding seven boards.
Rachael Crowder led Parry McCluer with a game-high 21 points. Hailey Camden also reached double digits with 11.
Covington (8-9) will be back in action Tuesday at home in the first round of the Pioneer District Tournament as they host the fifth-seeded Craig County Rockets at 6 p.m.
The Blues made it a sweep of the Cougars with a 32-25 win in the preliminary.
Sa’mone Moore led the Cougars with 14 points, while Leteashia Clarke chipped in six. Montanna Hall and Kristina Huffman added two points each and Bailey Hall rounded out the CHS scoring with one point.
