MONETA – The Alleghany boys basketball team won their third straight game with Wednesday night’s 62-46 win over the Staunton River Golden Eagles.
Cassidy Burns paced the Mountaineers with 14 points, while Seth Bradley finished with 10. Anthony Church just missed double figures with nine and Justin Lowen finished with eight points.
Alleghany jumped out to a 15-10 lead after one and led 23-17 at the break before outscoring Staunton River 39-29 in the second half.
“It was a good game all-around,” said Alleghany coach Thymper Leitch. “Mark Tembo and Cassidy Burns really stepped it up in the second half and Anthony (Church) got us going with some quick baskets to start the game.
“The playoffs basically started last night for us,” added Leitch. “Every game we play now is positioning us for the postseason.”
Staunton River’s Wesley Gates led all scorers with a game-high 18 points.
Alleghany (13-7, 4-2 BRD) has two pivotal games with William Byrd remaining on their regular season schedule.
The Mountaineers will go to Byrd Wednesday before hosting the Terriers Friday at Mountaineer Gym. Both games start at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity game.
