Covington Woman’s Club Conducts March Meeting

The Covington Woman’s Club met Monday, March 15, 2010, at the Salvation Army Building, at 7 p.m. President Vicki Price presided and thanked everyone for bringing items for use at the Salvation Army. She also thanked the Home Life and Health Committee, chaired by Carolyn O’Conner, for making the arrangements for the meeting and providing refreshments. Shirley Post and Phyllis Bosserman were greeters.

Sharon Ferguson was the guest of Doris Hagedon.

Bea Kasnick, president of the Corporation Board, introduced the speaker, Charles Rusmisel, BB &T Investment Counselor. He spoke about the purpose of the club funds, risk tolerance, and investing in general. He offered several investment strategies available to the club and answered questions at the conclusion of his talk.

During the business meeting, Carolyn O’Conner led the club collect and Nancy Caperton led the pledge to the American flag. Corresponding secretary Joann Williams read a note of thanks from the 2009 Christmas Mother and a request for funding for Boys’ State and Girls’ State from Alleghany High School.

The president reported that in 2009, after all the reporting was done, the club gave 2,221 volunteer hours and donated $12,088. She congratulated the club members on this achievement.

Arts co-chairman Paula Pickwick announced that 22 blue ribbon Student Art Show winners will be judged at the Shenandoah District Meeting on March 20 in Staunton.

The Education Committee, chaired by Nancy Moga, reported that Scholarship applications are due by April 1. A decision will be announced in May.

The Home Life Committee, chaired by Carolyn O’Conner, reported that the St. Patrick’s Day party at Alleghany Manor on March 10 was a great success.

Nominating Committee chairman Karen Robertson, and members of her committee Becky Throckmorton and Nancy Birchfield, presented a report. Voting will take place at the April meeting and installation will be at the May meeting.

The Lunches-to-Go fund raiser will be held on April 27 at Granbery United Methodist Church. Bea Kasnick and Carolyn O’Conner will co-chair the event. The lunch will consist of chicken salad croissant, potato salad, Jell-o salad and cake for a cost of $7. Orders need to be turned in to Carolyn O’Conner by April 16.

The Shenandoah District Meeting will be held Saturday. Five members will be attending the meeting: Vicki Price, Anne McMennamy, Paula Pickwick, Charlotte Williamson, Clara Moseley and Bea Kasnick. Clara Moseley will be installed as District Treasurer and Charlotte Williamson will be installed as Secretary.

The club will host the annual Corporation Board meeting Monday, April 19 at Granbery United Methodist Church. The Club meeting is at 6 p.m. and the Corporation Board meeting at 7 p.m.
