ROANOKE (AP) – The Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General has found security issues, errors in claims and other problems at the agency’s regional office in Roanoke.
A report released last week by the agency says mail containing veterans’ personally identifiable information was laying unsecured on desks.
The report also says the weight load of thousands of folders stacked on top of filing cabinets jeopardizes the structural integrity of the building housing the office.
U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello discussed the findings Thursday with Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki. Perriello called the problems “outrageous and unacceptable.”
Veterans advocate Jim Strickland says none of the VA’s 57 regional offices are in any better shape.
