PENDLETON, W.Va. – The Bath County softball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-0 win over the reigning West Virginia Group A Runner-Up Pendleton Wildcats.
Sophomore sensation Jailyn Ford checked the Wildcats to just two hits in the win, while striking out 18 and not issuing a free pass.
The game went scoreless through five innings, despite the Chargers stranding a runner at third in four of the first five innings.
The Lady Chargers finally got on the board in the sixth.
Amanda Shifflett walked and stole second and third before scoring after managing to work her way out of a rundown. While Amanda was caught in the rundown, sister Sam managed to work her way all the way around to third base and scored on Jordan Fry’s RBI single to left.
The Chargers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Allison Sharp singled and scored on Ford’s RBI double. Kortni Lindsay then plated Ford with an RBI double of her own to give Bath a 4-0 lead.
“Once again, we did not get the bats going until late in the game,” said Bath coach Lisa Baugh. “J.J. had it going on the mound and at the plate and it was good to see a couple new girls (Kortni and Jordan) get crucial RBIs. They are going to get more playing time contributing like that.
“We knew our bench was deep and today was evidence of that,” added Baugh. “Now we have to refocus on a tough Alleghany team Thursday.”
The Chargers will play host to Alleghany (2-1) today at 4:30 p.m. in Hot Springs.
