The Covington track team played host to Alleghany and Greenbrier East for its first home meet of the season with the boys narrowly losing to Alleghany, 65-55, and the Alleghany girls and East girls tying with 54.5 points apiece.
Covington’s Troy Helton posted wins in both the long jump (19-3.5) and high jump (6-0). Keenan Smith won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.70 seconds and Kevin Downer won the 3200-meter run.
Covington’s 4×100 and 4×400-meter relay teams both posted wins on the day.
Alleghany’s Victor Brown had a great day with wins in the triple jump (37-3) and 400 (53.0), while taking second in the high jump (6-0) and third in the long jump (18-4).
Cimarron Nicely also had a good day with wins in the 800 (2:16.5) and the mile (4:49.5). Tom Persinger won the shot put with a heave of 41-5.5, while Anthony Church won the discus with a throw of 120 feet, nine inches.
Shanice Laws led the CHS girls with wins in the triple jump (30-3.5), 100-meter (13.50) and 200-meter dash (28.70). Devone Laws won the girls shot put with a heave of 32-4.5 and LaDonna Billups won the discus with a throw of 101 feet, four inches.
Alleghany’s Kayln Carter won the girls long jump with a leap of 14-4.5, while Paige Irvine won the mile with a time of 6:23.50. Alison Adkins won the 3200-meter run with a time of 15 minutes, two seconds.
Lychelle Lewis finished second in the triple jump 28-7.5 and 200-meters (28.80) for the AHS girls. Amber Mann added a second place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:47.60.
The Alleghany track team will be back in action April 14 at Northside.
Covington will be back in action April 17 at the All-American Relays at Radford.
