LOW MOOR – A key third quarter in which Buffalo Gap outscored Alleghany 15-4 was the decisive factor in the Bison’s 52-42 non-district girls’ basketball victory on Tuesday in Low Moor.
Buffalo Gap improved to 4-0 on the season as the Bison were led by Hannah Coffman who scored a game-high 20 points which is above her average on the season at 16.8.
Alleghany has some veterans on the team that were part of the Mountaineers girls’ team which reached the state tournament prior to the school merger with Covington. The Cougars gave it all they had playing against a team that is bound for a fourth straight state tournament appearance.
Bryce Leitch led the way for Alleghany with a team-high 18 points, while Kelsey Nicely added 13 points and six rebounds. Nicely was also 9-for-11 at the free-throw line.
It was a closely contested first half separated by only three points at 20-17, but the third quarter was the game’s difference maker.
The Cougars would get within as close as one point at 22-21 following a Leitch basket to close the gap.
That gap would not be let open any further for AHS as Buffalo Gap closed out the third quarter by scoring the final 13 points of the period to take a 35-21 lead.
AHS shot 2-for-19 from three-point range.
The loss dropped Alleghany to 4-2. The Cougars will play Buffalo Gap once again on January 31st.
