LOW MOOR – In a wild finish last Wednesday evening, a late fourth quarter surge helped Staunton spoil Alleghany’s home-opener as the Storm prevailed victorious 54-47 over the Cougars for a second straight week
In a non-district boys basketball game against two future Shenandoah District foes, Staunton overcame a late one point fourth quarter deficit to shutdown Alleghany over the final two minutes as the Storm outscored the Cougars 9-1 and improved 4-1 overall.
Staunton was led by Joaquin Bell who scored a game-high 23 points to go along with five three-pointers as he helped the Storm to their fourth straight win. Ky’Ree Scott added 13.
Chase DePriest was the high scorer for Alleghany with 11 points. Bubby Entsminger and Mason Hale each added 10 points.
It was the tale of two different games with the same outcome. The week prior the Storm beat the Cougars by double digits 66-52 in Staunton.
In their second meeting it was a different game as Alleghany hung with Staunton throughout. The Cougars pushed the Storm to the brink and were even up by four points after the first quarter.
While the fourth quarters finals three minutes was the biggest part of the entire game, it was the second quarter that was the key for Staunton.
The Storm down four points after the first quarter, held Alleghany to only eight points and outscored them by seven points to take a three-point halftime lead.
Nine of Bell’s 23 points came in the crucial second quarter.
Alleghany (2-2) is off until this weekend when they take part in the Northside Invitational Tournament being held in Roanoke.
