RICHMOND (AP) – Federal prosecutors say they will seek a life sentence for a Tennessee man accused of holding three people hostage in the Wytheville post office last year.
Warren “Gator” Taylor already has been convicted of at least two violent felonies. Another would bring a mandatory life sentence.
A U.S. magistrate judge ruled Monday that Taylor was competent to stand trial on June 28.
The Sullivan County, Tenn., man is charged with kidnapping, attempted murder and weapons offenses in the Dec. 23 standoff. A U.S. Postal Service supervisor and two customers were held hostage for nine hours.
Investigators say Taylor was motivated by his hatred of the federal government and that he planned to attack in Roanoke, but got tired of driving and decided to go to Wytheville instead.
