Seven railroad cars derailed in the Clifton Forge east yard Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. According to reports, the diesel engine passed over the rail that broke, and the cars derailed.
None of the cars turned over, but they were leaned over so they were blocking the main line into the Clifton Forge yard.
A company stationed in Richmond that handles derailments for CSX was dispatched to Clifton Forge and worked Saturday night into Sunday morning righting the cars and repairing the tracks.
At the time of the derailment, the yard crew was separating empty freight and coal cars into separate trains.
Shown at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday is one of the first trains that left Clifton Forge heading east after the derailment was cleared up, leaving the yard and heading down the James River on the River Division of CSX.
