Local postal operations were suspended today due to winter weather and high winds.
There was no delivery or collection of mail today in the Highlands and retail windows at local post offices were closed.
Covington Postmaster B.B. Bryant said operations were suspended in post offices that are part of the Metro-Capital service area surrounding Washington, D.C.
“It’s basically areas that are being impacted by the weather and high winds,” Bryant said. “We assume everything will be back up and running Thursday.”
The U.S. Postal Service is asking its customers in the Highlands to clear a safe, accessible path to their mailboxes.
“I am asking our customers to please, if at all possible, to clear approaches to their mailboxes along the roadway,” Bryant said this morning.
In addition, sidewalks, steps and passageways for foot carriers should be cleared of ice and snow.
If mailboxes are blocked off and conditions are too difficult, letter carriers are instructed by the Postal Service not to make deliveries for safety reasons.
