CLIFTON FORGE, Va.(VR) – Mountain Gateway Community College is offering a one-day training workshop to help sawmill workers, loggers, and hardwood manufacturers maximize productivity and increase profits. The workshop, titled Lumber and Log Grading for Maximizing Yields, will
take place Friday, November 22, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Scott Hall, Room 375 on the MGCC Clifton Forge campus.
This hands-on session is designed to give participants practical skills in log grading, scaling techniques, and sawmill operations, as well as the latest insights into the hardwood market.
Participants will learn how to assess log value and quality factors, master log scaling techniques, and identify defects in both logs and lumber. The workshop will also focus on optimizing sawing techniques to reduce waste and increase production, all while helping participants stay competitive in a changing market.
The training is ideal for sawmill operators, logging contractors, and even owners of portable sawmills looking to enhance their operations. Tuition for the workshop is $50 for qualified participants in the Appalachian Hardwood Technology Initiative (AHTI) program, and $125 for those paying unsubsidized.
