HOT SPRINGS – Retha Joann Fox Young, 82, of Hot Springs, died Monday, April 12, 2010 at her residence.

She was born April 4, 1928 in Reedy, W.Va., the daughter of the late Holly T. Fox and Arie Bell Straight Fox.

She was married to Marlin Alltop and Wilbur Young, who both preceded her in death.

Retha was a longtime resident of Lyndhurst, where she raised her family as well as many neighborhood children.

Her home was always open with plenty to eat.

She enjoyed working as a Mary Kay Consultant and was a former employee of Roses Department Store in Waynesboro. She was a member of the Whitehill Church of the Brethren in Stuarts Draft and attended Eden United Methodist Church in Hot Springs. Before her health declined, she enjoyed attending activities with the Bath County Senior Citizens and the Red Hats Society.

She is survived by five children, Duane Alltop of Staunton, Debbie Hite Shifflett and husband, Gary of Waynesboro, Diana Via and husband, Ronnie of Grottoes, John Young and wife, Debbie of Hot Springs, and Joe Young and wife, Kim of Stuarts Draft; three stepchildren, Clyde Young and wife, Connie of Greenville, Jarry Young and wife, Shirley of Stuarts Draft and David Young and wife, Teresa Stuarts Draft; special friends and caregivers, Paula and Gary Thompson of Covington, Stella Darlene Brown of Millboro, and Jeannie Nicely of Clifton Forge; two brothers, Jasper Newton Fox of Fresno, Calif. and James Edward Fox of Madera, Calif.; two sisters, Mary DeEtta Barton of Gladstone, Ala. and Betty Jane Honeycutt of Milne, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, “D.J.”, Corey, Jeff, Greg, Adam, Logan, Sabrina, Jessica, Augusta, Jamie, Kristi, and Hope; two step-grandchildren, Noah and Yvonne; a foster grandchild, April Banks; five great-grandchildren, Megan, Gabriana, Michael, Cody and Britney and Trinity.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Young; a special companion, R. C. “Mac” McCorskey; two brothers, William Oris Fox and Gregory Allen Fox; three sisters, Orlia Callow, Blondena Linger and Stella Mae Linger; a grandchild, Virginia Ashley Banks; and a great-grandchild, Adam James Banks.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with the Rev. Byong H. Ahn officiating.

Interment will be in the Warm Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Winebriner, Eddie McAllister, Ray Rogers, Billy Hodge, Bud Caracofe, Jason Powell and John Wright.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eden United Methodist Church, 5643 Jackson River Turnpike, Hot Springs, Va. 24445 or the Hot Springs Rescue Squad, P.O. Box N, Hot Springs, Va. 24445.
