LOW MOOR – Prior to their regular season finale victory over Floyd County on Thursday evening, days before on Tuesday, for a second straight year Alleghany won the Three Rivers District volleyball regular season title after a straight-set win over Glenvar on Tuesday in Salem.
In the Cougars district winning match they defeated the Highlanders easily after winning a close first set; 25-21, 25-11, 25-7.
Senior Kaiya Lian had team-high 14 kills and seven digs, while fellow senior Laken Tingler added eight kills. Senior Bryce Leitch had six kills and three aces. Meanwhile sophomore Kendra Dressler dished out 29 assists, and 10 digs.
The Cougars regular season finale wrapped up with another straight-set win over Floyd County in Low Moor winning; 25-13, 25-17, 25-12.
The seniors led the way Thursday as Tingler had a game-high 11 kills, while Leitch had 10, and Lian added nine. Tingler and fellow senior Savannah Cash each had nine digs and Dressler added 26 assists.
The win over the Buffaloes was the Alleghany’s ninth straight as they wrapped up the regular season at 20-3 overall and 11-1 in the district. In their only two seasons as a merged program, the Cougars are a combined 21-3 in the district.
The Cougars ended the regular season winning 14 straight sets, including four straight matches where they won in straight sets. Their last set loss was against James River (Buchanan) on October 8th.
Alleghany is the top seed in the district tournament which begins on Monday as the Cougars host the 4th seed Carroll County (12-9, 7-5 Three Rivers). In the other district play match 2nd seeded James River (Buchanan) (16-7, 9-3 Three Rivers) hosts the 3rd seeded Radford (11-7, 9-3 Three Rivers).
The district championship will be held on Wednesday at the higher seed.
Meanwhile Alleghany’s junior varsity are also the top seed in the JV tournament. The JV Cougars wrapped up their regular season at 19-4 overall and 11-1 in the district following a two-set win over Floyd County; 25-13, 25-18.
The JV Cougars will host Glenvar on Wednesday in the JV district championship. The Highlanders were the only team to defeat the Cougars during district play which occurred on Tuesday.
Other notable match recap – Alleghany defeated Patrick County on October 15th in straight sets winning; 25-18, 25-19, 25-20.
Tingler led the way with a match-high 12 kills, while LIan had 14 digs, and Dressler added 30 assists.
