The C&O Historical Society is using plans from the original drawing for the depot at Smith Creek Yard in Clifton Forge dated 1891 to build a new replica passenger station at the Heritage Center.
Construction has started on the new station by Ross Hammond, Commonwealth Construction Services.
The cost of the station and improvement to the grounds will be $350,000.
The Alleghany Foundation has provided a $149,000 matching grant and a campaign will be started to raise the remaining funds.
The historical society hopes to have the building finished by summer, and Amtrak trains stopping there in the fall.
