Howard Arnold “Pappy” Johnston, age 87, of 320 Hershberger Rd. Roanoke formerly of Covington died March 27, 2010 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was the widow of Sara Curtis Johnston.
Mr. Johnston was born September 24, 1923 at Raphine, Va. the son of Roscoe Arnold and Lillian Palmer Johnston. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Air Corp as a navigator on bombers in the European – African – Middle Eastern Theatre of Operation in Central Europe’s Rhineland – Air Combat and France Campaigns. He was a member of the Virginia National Guard with nineteen years service, retiring as a Colonel. Mr. Johnston was of the Methodist faith and was an educator in the Alleghany Highlands School Systems and Botetourt School System. He was a salesman with Continental Homes and was a member of Covington Masonic Lodge 171 AF & AM, The Royal Arch Chapter #18 where he went through the chairs, Commandrey where he went through the chairs, the Kazim Shriners of Roanoke, VA. He was also a member of the Botetourt Ruritan Club and Botetourt Retired Teachers Association.
Mr. Johnson is survived by two sons, Gregory H. Johnston and wife, Robin of Chesterfield County, Keith B. Johnston and wife, Deborah of Goshen, IN; one daughter-in-law, Gloria Little Johnston of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Christopher Johnston, Kelsey Johnston, both of Goshen, IN; two sisters, Helen Weisenbury of Virginia, Althea Buchan of Pine Grove, PA; a special friend and companion, Marie Huff of Roanoke.
In addition to his wife, Sara Curtis Johnson, Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cathy Johnston and by a son, Phillips Arnold Johnston.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 2, 2010, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until service time at Loving Funeral Home.
Masonic burial rites will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. by Covington Lodge 171 AF & AM at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
