MWV’s Covington mill has announced several position changes.
The personnel changes involve Shontae Clark, Michael Kern, Greg Kristoff, Darlene Thomas and Scott Unroe.
Shontae Clark accepted the position of financial analyst.
Clark participates in monthly financial close activities, and is responsible for establishing transparency in financial performance and analysis to support decision making. She reports to Andrea Miller, director of finance – Covington.
Clark graduated in 2009 from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., with a bachel of science degree in accounting. While a student, she held summer accounting intern positions with General Motors, in Shreveport, La.; Cargill Beef Packers in Fresno, Calif.; and Cargill Dressing Sauces & Oils in Gainesville, Ga.
She joined MWV from her most recent position as a domestic tax analyst with Cargill Global Tax & Customs, in Minneapolis, Minn.
Michael Kern accepted the position of operations supervisor on No. 2 Paper Machine. Kern is responsible for the overall coordination of No. 2 Paper Machine operations to ensure safety, quality, and productivity for employees and customers. He reports to Steve Cogar, paper mill superintendent.
Kern graduated from Alleghany High School in 1989. He started his career that same year with Automotive Industries, where he advanced to supervisor in quality control. He joined MWV as a laborer in 1993. In 1994, he moved to quality assurance as a print lab technician, and then accepted the position of tour quality coordinator for QA in 1996. Kern was promoted to tour foreman for QA in 1998. In 2000, he moved to No. 5 Paper Machine as tour foreman. In 2004, Kern accepted a position as tour foreman on No. 2 Paper Machine. He accepted his previous position as senior engineer for the No. 2 Paper Machine in 2009.
Greg Kristoff accepted the position of superintendent for the No. 1 Paper Machine. Kristoff is responsible for the safety, quality, and productivity of the No. 1 Paper Machine, which includes the implementation of the MOS and yield improvement systems along with reliability initiatives. Kristoff reports to Steve Cogar, paper mill superintendent.
Kristoff received his industrial journeyman electrician card as part of the National Joint Apprenticeship Program in Roanoke in 1983. He graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk in 1995 with a B.S. in electrical engineering technology. Kristoff began his career with MWV in 1995 as a technical assistant rotating through the Power, Electrical Maintenance, and No. 6 Paper Machine departments. In 1996, he became a process engineer for the Paper Process Group, and moved to the No. 5 Paper Machine in 1997. In 2000, Kristoff was promoted to senior process engineer on the No. 5 Paper Machine, and was promoted to senior process engineer on the No. 1 Paper Machine in 2001. In 2010, he was promoted to superintendent on No. 8 Paper Machine.
Darlene Thomas accepted the position of senior human resources generalist at the Covington mill. Thomas is responsible for HR functions for the salaried departments, as well as other HR generalist responsibilities. She reports to Keith Potter, lead human resources generalist.
A graduate of Covington High School, Thomas earned her associate degree in secretarial science from Phillips Business College in Lynchburg. She began her career at MWV as a temp in the Westvaco temporary pool in 1981. Thomas was hired as an accountant in the accounting department in 1986, and promoted to senior accountant in 1988. She transferred to HR in 1994 as a clerk. Thomas was promoted to personnel records administrator in 1995, and to senior personnel records administrator in 2001. Since 2006, she has held the position of employee relations/ personnel services generalist.
Scott Unroe accepted the position of waste treatment plant operations coordinator. Unroe is responsible for day-to-day operation of the waste treatment plant. He also holds the position of validator, and will coordinate maintenance needs for the WTP. He reports to Jill Shifflett, WTP area supervisor.
Unroe graduated from Alleghany High School, and has taken classes at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College and DeVry Institute of Technology. He began his career with MWV in August 1988 on the extra board. Unroe was promoted to technician in the Paper Process Group in December 1988. In November 1990, he was promoted to finishing coordinator on No. 1 Paper Machine, and then promoted to shift coordinator for the paper mill in March 1993. He transferred to the bleach room as bleached pulp mill operations coordinator in 1994, and to the Woodyard as fiberline operations coordinator in 2005. Unroe was promoted to fiberline foreman in 2008.
